Short Answer

The right choice depends on the final look you want and how much physical abuse the concrete will take. We offer two professional-grade solutions:

  • Choose Polyurethane if: You want a heavy-duty shield against vehicle traffic, need maximum oil resistance for a driveway.

→ EverFlor - Prime PU

  • Choose Acrylic if: You want an eco-friendly, zero-odour application, need a fully breathable coating.

→ SummitSeal - Ultimate Concrete Sealer - Solvent Free

Explanation:

Exterior concrete is incredibly tough, but it is not invincible. Whether it is a freshly poured driveway, a concrete patio, or commercial exterior walkways, leaving the slab bare against the elements is a massive mistake.

Unsealed concrete is basically a rigid sponge. It drinks up rainwater, absorbs dripping engine oil, and provides the perfect damp environment for green algae and black lichen to thrive. Worse, in the winter, the absorbed water freezes and expands, literally blowing the surface of your concrete apart (a process known as spalling).

To protect your investment and stop endless hours of pressure washing, you must seal the slab. We offer two distinct chemical solutions for exterior concrete: EverFlor - Prime PU (Polyurethane) and SummitSeal - Ultimate Concrete Sealer - Solvent Free (Acrylic).

Here is our straightforward guide to the pros, cons, and perfect use cases for each.

1. EverFlor - Prime PU: The Heavy-Duty Enhancer

Polyurethane is the traditional, commercial-grade heavyweight. It is a solvent-based sealer designed to penetrate deep into the concrete, offering maximum physical strength and dramatic visual transformation.

The Pros:

  • The "Wet Look" Finish: If your concrete looks faded, dusty, and chalky, polyurethane is the answer. It penetrates the pores and permanently locks in a rich, dark "wet look" with a glossy sheen, instantly making tired concrete look premium.

  • Maximum Chemical Resistance: EverFlor - Prime PU creates a highly durable, tight chemical barrier. If you are sealing a driveway where cars might leak engine oil, brake fluid, or where you regularly use harsh chemicals, polyurethane offers the highest level of stain blockage.

  • Abrasion Resistance: Because it cures incredibly hard, it easily withstands the friction of hot car tyres, turning steering wheels, and heavy foot traffic without wearing away.

The Cons (The Honest Trade-Offs):

  • The Paint Clash Rule: As mentioned in our other guides, polyurethane creates a slick, solvent-based barrier. If you think you might want to paint your concrete patio with an outdoor water-based acrylic paint in a few years, do not use polyurethane. The paint will not bond to it.

  • Solvent Odours: During application, it will have a strong chemical smell. While this is less of an issue outdoors, you still need to be mindful of open windows near the application site.

  • Strict Moisture Limits: The concrete must be bone dry before application. If moisture is trapped in the slab, the polyurethane can cure with a cloudy, milky finish (blooming).

2. SummitSeal - Ultimate Concrete Sealer: The Invisible Shield

If you want to protect your concrete but hate the idea of harsh chemicals, strong smells, or a glossy finish, our water-based acrylic sealer is the perfect modern alternative.

The Pros:

  • The "Invisible" Natural Finish: Unlike polyurethane, this acrylic sealer does not dramatically darken the concrete or leave a glossy sheen. Once dry, it is practically invisible. It protects the slab from rain and stains while maintaining the raw, natural, matte appearance of the concrete.

  • Breathability: This is a massive advantage for outdoor concrete. SummitSeal is microporous. It stops heavy rain from soaking into the slab, but allows naturally rising ground moisture to easily escape as vapour. This prevents the sealer from blistering or trapping dampness.

  • Zero Odour & Eco-Friendly: Because it is solvent-free, there are no toxic fumes. It is completely safe to use around garden plants, pets, and ponds.

  • Easy Cleanup: You don't need white spirit. When it comes time to clean your rollers and sprayers, you simply wash them out with warm, soapy water.

The Cons:

  • Slightly Lower Chemical Resistance: While it offers excellent protection against rain, BBQ grease, and general dirt, a water-based acrylic is not quite as impenetrable to heavy automotive fluids (like prolonged brake fluid spills) as a heavy-duty polyurethane.

  • No Colour Restoration: If your concrete is heavily faded and you want to restore a deep, dark colour, this sealer will not achieve that. It preserves the current look rather than enhancing it.

3. The "Per Use Case" Selection Guide

Still deciding? Match your project to the scenarios below:

Choose EverFlor - Prime PU for:

  • High-traffic driveways housing multiple vehicles.

  • Concrete spaces where you want a glossy, premium "wet look."

  • Commercial exterior loading bays requiring maximum oil resistance.

Choose SummitSeal - Ultimate Concrete Sealer for:

  • Garden patios where you want an invisible, natural concrete finish.

  • Projects near ponds, delicate flowerbeds, or areas where solvent smells are an issue.

  • Slabs that may have slight rising damp issues and require a breathable coating.

  • Spaces you might want to paint with a coloured acrylic masonry/floor paint in the future.

Conclusion

Leaving exterior concrete unsealed is a fast track to frost damage, weed growth, and stubborn stains.

By matching the right chemistry to your specific needs, you can drastically extend the lifespan of your concrete and eliminate the dreaded annual pressure-washing chore.

→ EverFlor - Prime PU: Heavy-duty, glossy, and highly oil-resistant.

→ SummitSeal - Ultimate Concrete Sealer: Invisible, breathable, and eco-friendly.
